Lend a Hand, Save a Paw

Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter (OSCAS) is a registered charity and non-profit dog shelter that has been in existence since 2006. All the dogs in the shelter were rescued from the streets or from being culled.

About 70 Singapore Specials call this shelter home and needless to say, it can only be sustained with help from trusty volunteers and kind donations or sponsorships.

Stray rescue in Singapore is a long tiring journey. Join us to be their voice.

Origin of OSCAS

It all started in 2004 when two good friends, Mary and Anita, started stray feeding in Changi.

Back then, when Changi was still a forested area, there used to be an old man on a bike with two pails of food for the dogs. When the old man disappeared sometime later in 2004, the two women, worried that the dogs deep in the jungle were not getting fed, decided to venture into the jungle to feed the dogs.

Mary Soo, co-founder of Oasis Second Chance Animal Shelter (OSCAS), shares how it was meeting the dogs for the first time.

Holding a torchlight and pushing a trolley with big basins of food, Anita and I decided to venture into the jungle one day. When we shone the torchlight in one of the openings inside, we saw the eyes of many stray dogs.

We put the food down on some paper and stepped back. The dogs came forward to eat and after they were done, disappeared back into the jungle. Not a single one of them rushed for the food. They were well-behaved. It is a misconception that strays are vicious and rush for food. They did not do any of that!

Anyhow, after a few nights of us feeding, the dogs started waiting for us. Some even barked and wagged their tails! There were 40 or 50 and as word got around, more and more dogs came.

In 2005, when the authorities announced that the land would be cleared to build a space for air shows, and the dogs would be culled, the women went to the authorities to persuade them against it and to give them time to clear the dogs from the area. Armed with help from SPCA and a rented kennel space from their previous landlord, Ericsson Pet Farm, the ladies trapped 60 of the strays who became the first residents of OSCAS.

Today, OSCAS has relocated to Sungei Tengah but continues to be a shelter for the rescues, a place where Mary, Anita and volunteers continue to give their hearts to the doggies as they await their forever homes.

Now that you've read our story, join us on our journey to help find homes for our dogs!
