A Second Chance for Yang Yang
In November 2020, we welcomed a very sweet but horribly malnourished dog to our shelter. Yang Yang had been used as a factory guard dog, but he was left behind on the site when the factory closed down – without access to food or water.
We don’t know exactly how long Yang Yang was left to effectively starve to death. But the vets estimated it was at least 4 weeks.
Now just skin and bones, OSCAS quickly began vet treatment to try and help him recover. Although he began eating without any problems and began to show his happy personality on regular walks with our volunteers, the vets discovered that he had anaemia, a low platelet count and issues with his kidneys, liver and spleen. Organ issues like these are common when a dog hasn’t had access to food or water for a long time.
After a few weeks of initial treatment, Yang Yang’s condition has not improved. He has an enlarged spleen (so big that it’s moving adjacent organs), suspected kidney disease and a mass on his liver.
As this boy has embraced the shelter and our volunteers with love and thanks, we refuse to give up on him. We estimate that Yang Yang is only around five years old, and he deserves every chance to recover from being left behind on that factory site.
We have launched a fundraising campaign, calling on animal lovers everywhere to contribute to Yang Yang’s medical needs and, hopefully, his recovery. We need to raise urgent funds to take samples from his liver and spleen to determine if they are cancerous. If they are cancerous, we then need to undergo surgery - which alone can cost upwards of SGD$5,000 - and that’s only if the surgery goes to plan, and there are no issues along the way.
We also need to raise funds to support his recovery; Yang Yang is currently taking a lot of medication, vitamins, supplements and renal dog food to help his kidneys to recover.
